At the beginning of this century, a lot of this complex’s old buildings were replaced by new ones. The outdoor space was also tackled and the hospital invested in new greenery. Paul van Wijk, of Stijlgroep Architecten, drew up the masterplan for grounds. Several avenues were replanted with trees such as chestnuts, birches, oaks and hornbeams. The most striking avenue is the one with Sequoiadendron giganteum. These giant redwoods can grow to a very old age; in America, there is a specimen dating back around 3,000 years. The trees were planted by DPZ’s own garden designers. Thanks to their expert way of planting and aftercare, all of the trees are well established.
