The South Shields quayside is a tough place for trees. Few trees are able to tolerate the salty sea wind and here there is no shelter. Although this limits choice, Pinus niga subsp, nigra can withstand sea wind and this project demonstrates that with the right choice of species together with the right planting method and aftercare, trees can grow in the most difficult planting sites. Sustain Landscape planted the trees in specially designed underground tubs. In order to stand up to the power of the storms that come in of the sea, the trees were fitted with heavy duty above-ground anchoring.
