The year 2000 was a catastrophic year for Enschede. Explosions at a fireworks factory resulted in 23 dead and almost 1000 injured. The Roombeek district was heavily hit and many homes were destroyed or severely damaged. In the years that followed, the district was completely rebuilt. The original street plan remained but new designs were drawn up for the outdoor space. In the development plans for the public area, a detailed street level design was drawn up for each part of the plan, partly by the Urban Development Department and partly by Buro Sant & Co. Van den Berk Nurseries supplied the district with a wide variety of trees to give it the desired lively and green characteristics. More than ten years later, we are able to conclude that it has been a success. Roombeek has grown into a contemporary district with a wide diversity of modern architecture and a number of historic elements. They are all connected and surrounded trees such as Betula pendula, Quercus robur, Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon, Rhus typhina, Fagus sylvatica, Cornus controversa, Quercus palustris and Liriodendron tulipifera. Before deciding which species to choose, representatives of the municipality paid a lot of visits to the nursery and let themselves be inspired by what they saw on the many plots at Van den Berk.
